In January 2023, I saw a job advert for trainee train driver and, after some research into the company, I decided to apply.
I was fully aware that these jobs always attract a lot of applicants, so I knew I had to put in an extra effort to make my application stand out.
Whilst I don't officially know why my application was shortlisted out of the 4000+ that applied, I would like to think that the effort I put into my application helped.
My advice, for anyone who is considering completing an application, is to think carefully about what skills and experience you already have. Carefully research the role of a train driver and what skills are required. Then, consider how your own skills are transferable to the role and make sure you detail this in the answers you give within your application.
Write a paragraph or two for each of your answers and show you are making an effort. Just a few words or a couple of short sentences are not enough at this tough stage.
I was lucky enough to be short-listed on my first attempt, but if you're not, don't give in. You will find there is likely to be more than one train operator near you, so keep an eye out for vacancies at all of your local operators.
I hope this advice helps anyone who is thinking of applying ❤️ good luck! 👍

Train drivers in the UK earn a competitive salary, reflecting the skill and responsibility required for the role. On average, a train driver can expect to earn between £50,000 and £70,000 per year, with variations depending on experience, location, and the train operating company. Drivers working in London and other major cities often receive higher wages due to the cost of living and the complexity of routes. Newly qualified drivers typically start at the lower end of the scale, with salaries increasing as they gain experience and seniority. Overtime, weekend, and holiday shifts can significantly boost earnings, with some experienced drivers earning up to £80,000 or more. Beyond the salary, train drivers also enjoy benefits such as pension schemes, free or discounted travel, and comprehensive training programs. This makes train driving an attractive career option for those seeking stability and long-term prospects in the rail industry.

German train drivers begin a record six-day strike
Germany is bracing for widespread disruption to rail services after train drivers began a record six-day strike on Wednesday that will wreak havoc on travel plans, overwhelm supply chains and deal a fresh blow to a weakened economy.
The German Train Drivers’ Union (GDL) has announced the start of a strike on passenger trains from 2am Wednesday local time (0100GMT). The strike will last until 6pm on Monday (0500GMT).
Long-distance, regional and commuter rail services will be significantly affected due to the strike from 23 to 29 January, the National railway operator said.
The company advises passengers to check their flights 24 hours before travelling, postpone travel if possible and use a later ticket. Deutsche Bahn also called on the union to return to the bargaining table. A Deutsche Bahn spokeswoman told public broadcaster ARD:
It is now time to come together, negotiate, find compromises. We are ready to meet at any time, and any place, for negotiations and discussions.

I don't know how many times we have to say this but this is because the United States of America does not have public transit in any form that a European would recognize as such outside of a few very small, highly-dense municipal locations like NYC and Chicago, and having used both those systems and the U-Bahn i can firmly assert that the U-Bahn blows American subways into smithereens. we especially do not have accessible interstate passenger train service outside of that one commuter Amtrak loop in the northeast. the country is designed to force its citizens to use cars and only cars, and the government has made it policy to incentivize car ownership since the 1940s and punish any other form of transit, including just walking around. do you understand? the vast majority of roads here do not have bike lanes. when we do have bike lanes they are not protected by a curb or divider, they are just white lines painted on the asphalt. you will regularly encounter roads and streets--inside of cities and suburbs, not just in rural areas--that do not have sidewalks
#they will never get it unless theyre actually forced to live here lmao#a German drivers license is 800-2000€ btw which IS very expensive i agree#however that is money being paid directly to the government so they can use as much of it as possible to tongue Israel's butthole#and then whatever is left over for trains and bike lanes and sidewalks#as opposed to the usa where a license costs basically nothing and requires almost zero skills testing and as a result the only thing that#kills more children than cars in this country is guns#lmao#however having looked at OP's blog i just want to say they're right about red dwarf#peace and love on planet earth

It only took a couple of days to find out that i was successful this time 🥳
I had passed all the assessments, and they would be in touch soon to let me know details of the next stage of the recruitment process, which was a medical.
I was sent details of where and when to attend and upon arrival, I was given a questionnaire to complete to give details of my doctor, any surgeries I had had, any health conditions, and a list of any medications I was taking.
I was called into a room with a medical assessor, and the first thing he conducted was a urine test. This was to check for drugs, alcohol and diabetes.
I also completed a breath test.
He checked my blood pressure, pulse, and did a full ECG to check for any heart conditions.
I completed a sight test, including checks for colour blindness.
He gave me a full hearing test.
Once all this was complete, my results were given to a doctor, and I was invited through to see them. They checked through my results and then did a few strength, mobility and balance tests with me. The only thing that needed to be confirmed was my urine results, which needed to come back from the labs and could take about 48 hours. If this came back clear (which I knew it would be fine as I dont take drugs and I only drink occasionally), then i would be passed as fit for the role of train driver. These results and full doctors report would be sent straight to the recruiting officer.
A few days later, I received confirmation that all was fine ❤️
I had done it, I had completed the full recruitment process! 🎉
I just needed to wait for further details and I could hand in my notice with my current employer.
